This week our Advent blog featured the shepherds in the Christmas story. Out of all the important people in the world, the Lord choose to reveal the birth of Jesus to the common workers…Shepherds. Everyday people out there doing their everyday jobs, were they ever surprised that Christmas Eve 2000 years ago!

Craft: No Sew Blanket
The only material you need for this project …material! 1 and 1/2 yards of 2 different pieces of fleece. Lay out both pieces on a large flat surface such as a bed, table, or floor. With the side of the fleece or pattern you want to show facing outward, trim edges to make sure all are even.
After all of your sides are ready, take a 3x5 note card and place on the corner of your blanket and cut out a rectangle, cutting through both pieces of fabric. Do this to all 4 corners. Then you can cut your 1- 2 inch strips all around the perimeter.
Next, the fun part, is tying the knots. You will want to double knot each pair of strands. The first knot will be loose and the second one will be pulled tightly. We had 5 people working on ours so “many hands make light work."
Finally, cuddle up under your cozy creation and read The Crippled Lamb or just take a well-deserved long winter nap. My girls wanted to make a blanket for themselves and another to give away as a gift or to take to a shelter. You can also point out to young children that this blanket will keep you warm just like Joshua kept baby Jesus warm in the story.
“And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks by night. An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and they were terrified. But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid I bring you good news of great joy …You will find the baby wrapped in swaddling clothes and lying in a manger.” (Luke 2:8, 9, 10 &12)
The shepherds were the first to hear about baby Jesus but not the last. Let’s continue to share His story with others. Maybe even pass along an extra blanket. A Christmas book and a Fleecy No Sew Blanket would make a great last minute gift for that special teacher, best friend or favorite relative. Join us next week as we celebrate Jesus’ birthday!
