When my children were little, one big issue we had was how to keep the older boys quiet while my infant daughter took her naps. I came across these great ideas from thedomesticfour.com as a remedy to that problem. First, you will need to get several colorful boxes with lids from an inexpensive store such as the Dollar Tree (in fact, most all items can be purchased there). Fill each box with one activity (like the ones pictured below) then give the older children one or two boxes to entertain themselves during baby's nap time. It gives the baby a quiet nap time, your older child a fun activity he can do by himself, and best of all it gives you freedom for some rest or laundry duty.
1. POM POM COLOR SORTING:
Need: 1 bag of pom poms
1 pair of kitchen tongs
1 muffin tin
Pick up each pom pom with tongs and sort by color into muffin tin.
2. SENSORY PUZZLE:
Need: foam puzzles
1 bag of rice
Mix puzzle pieces in the rice. Kids search through the rice to find pieces and complete the puzzles.
3. PAINT STRIP COLOR MATCHING:
Need: large bag of craft sticks
2 identical sets of paint strip samples
Cut apart and glue small color squares on craft sticks. Have child match sticks to second set of color squares.
(All of these activities encourage such skills as fine motor movement, sensory stimulation, sorting, matching, and premath - several birds with one stone!) .
More ideas for boxes can be found on thedomesticfour.com and Pinterest. Danielle from thedomesticfour suggests having 10 or more boxes on hand to switch out and to use only one or two boxes per child per quiet time.
Enjoy the quiet time!
