This is the scene that my son and his wife woke up to the other morning. It looked like a bomb had exploded in their kitchen. Actually, two 7 month old black lab puppy bombs to be exact.
I was totally amused by the whole thing. Mainly because I felt like I had in some small way been avenged for all the times my house looked like their kitchen because of my oldest son. I have to say, I think the puppies paid him back well on my behalf! Payback is so sweet.
As I continued to look over the picture and revel in my feelings of revenge, I actually began to feel somewhat sorry for them, not sorry enough to go help clean up, but still…sorry. Where in the world would one even begin to clean up such a mess? It was a bit overwhelming, especially for that time of morning.
The more I looked at the picture on my phone, the more I began thinking how my life at times can look like the messy picture in front of me. Sometimes, things just get messy. Have you ever felt like that? And as I stare at the mess, I feel overwhelmed. Where do I even attempt to start to clean things up – to restore order and some semblance of sanity?
Instead of rambunctious puppies reeking havoc, my messes tend to come from things like overcommitting, thinking I have to do things myself because no one else can do it as good as me…really? Sometimes, the mess comes because I choose to do life my way, on my own terms, trying to force my plans in front of my Father’s plans for me.
Then I wake up one morning totally stunned by the absolute mess in front of me and confused as to how in the world it happened. Even worse, the mess is so deep and so wide that I don’t even know where to start cleaning it up.
What we need to do when we find ourselves staring in disbelief at the mess is remember Hebrews 4:16, “Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need.”
We cry out to God for help in cleaning up the mess. We confess our part in creating the mess. Our God can clean up anything, you know. We don’t have to clean it up by ourselves. Thank goodness!
