November is National Adoption month so I thought it would be fun to share our story. My husband and I had been discussing adoption options when my friend Bunnie and I were walking after school one day. She had gone to a baby shower the night before (for a newly adopted baby girl, Olivia), and she was talking about how beautiful and precious this baby was. Bunnie then said, “This place has the best babies, you and Catoe need to go there!” “This place” turned out to be Christian Family Services and we indeed went there! We went for our first orientation in October of 1994.
We then proceeded to jump through all of the hoops of adoption paperwork and the plethora of home visits and background checks. (Every family should be so well prepared for a new baby!) On one of our first Home Visits I had dessert and coffee ready for our Social worker, (This was to show off our incredible nurturing and hospitality skills), during our visit we smelled something burning, yes, I forgot to add water to the coffee maker. I then told Sarah the Social Worker, that the baby probably wouldn’t be drinking coffee anyway so please don’t count this against us! We were then told it would be about 1 to 2 years before we actually had a baby. (Maybe we should have served water!) Anyway, on April 1st, 1995 (yes, April Fool’s Day) Jean from Christian Family Services called and said that we had a beautiful baby girl!!! We went to scoop her up and bring her home; they really did have the best babies at that place! The Lord has blessed us beyond measure with our daughter Emma.
Children are truly a blessing and a miracle. This also started me thinking about all of the “miracles” that have to take place in order for an adoption to occur. You pray the birth mother doesn’t choose abortion, you pray that your child will love his/her adoptive family, you pray for God’s timing, you pray for a “miracle” that a birth family will seek the choice of adoption. The Lord has a lot going on during this process of bringing families together. We pray more families will actually be blessed through the adoption process.
While the Lord is working on all of these precious individual families He is also working on bringing us all together into His Kingdom Family. We are all adopted into God’s family of believers. No background check needed! He loves us and wants us just as we are. He loves us in our brokenness and with all of our imperfections. We are all so different yet we all have such a special place in His family, each able to share our own story. He is the ultimate Father who wants nothing more than to increase his family. God wants to give us all of His love, mercy, grace, character, and yes even His name, “Christian”. We are all adopted into the family of believers. What a beautiful and great example of how to build a family, not of blood and DNA but of pure love! So, all of you brothers and sisters in Christ and future family members let’s get busy about our Father’s work, we are now in the “family business” of building a Kingdom. “…In love He predestined us to be adopted as His sons (and daughters) through Jesus Christ, in accordance with His pleasure and will.” (Ephesians 1:5). Now it is our “pleasure” to serve in His family!! We are F A M I L Y!!
